{"id":12756,"date":"2013-02-21T16:20:16","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T21:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ebookrumors.com\/?p=12756"},"modified":"2013-02-21T16:20:16","modified_gmt":"2013-02-21T21:20:16","slug":"so-now-the-publishers-are-conspiring-with-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ebookrumors.com\/?p=12756","title":{"rendered":"So, now the publishers are conspiring with Amazon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This story at <strong><a title=\"Insatiable Greed Drives Publishers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/2\/21\/4010504\/amazon-publishers-face-class-action-antitrust-suit-from-indie\" target=\"_self\">the Verge<\/a><\/strong> certainly rings a bell so soon after these same publishers <strong>Random House<\/strong>, <strong>Penguin<\/strong>, <strong>Hachette<\/strong>, <strong>Simon &amp; Schuster<\/strong>, <strong>HarperCollins<\/strong> and <strong>Macmillan <\/strong>just settled with the <strong>US Department of Justice<\/strong> for their part in an <strong>eBook price-fixing conspiracy<\/strong> they had going with <strong>Apple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The same six are now being listed in a class-action anti-trust lawsuit being brought against them by <strong>New York<\/strong> and <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> independent bookstores for colluding with <strong>Amazon <\/strong>in an attempt to monopolize the eBook marketplace. The story hinges on the use of<strong> DRM (Digital Rights Management)<\/strong> by the publishers and Amazon to determine what companies can sell their titles. (So, first they were working with <strong>Apple <\/strong>to stop <strong>Amazon<\/strong> from forming a Monopoly, but now we hear they were also working with Amazon to form a monopoly. (I guess a monopoly&#8217;s good if you&#8217;re a part of it&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Do these publishers look bad, or what? God help them if they ever just competed fairly.
