{"id":5251,"date":"2010-04-01T09:46:57","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ebookrumors.com\/?p=5251"},"modified":"2010-04-01T09:46:57","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:46:57","slug":"the-peril-for-publishers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ebookrumors.com\/?p=5251","title":{"rendered":"The Peril for Publishers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We found an excellent article at <strong><em><a title=\"eBooks - pros and cons for publishers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/business-finance\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15819008\" target=\"_self\">The Economist<\/a><\/em><\/strong> describing the perilous questions that digital publishing poses for the traditional publishing world.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very detailed discussion of the difficulties\u00c2\u00a0awaiting traditional publishers as they are forced by market and technological advances to adapt their business models to the <strong>eBook Revolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem these corporate giants face\u00c2\u00a0is not whether they&#8217;ll be able to compete, it&#8217;s about whether they can get it through their big-business mindsets that a shift in product content and content delivery to something that has a fraction of\u00c2\u00a0the production\u00c2\u00a0costs of the old product, must mean a shift downward (hopefully, temporarily) in the <em>perceived<\/em> and <em>actual<\/em> product value and the profits that result. A shift in product cost and value should redraw the bottom line. Ignoring that will guarantee extinction.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional publishers simply cannot succeed in the new milieu if they&#8217;re going to focus on maintaining outmoded and unjustifiable profit levels. They have to be willing and able to take a loss.
