The eBook Market Continues to Prep for Christmas

Back in July we mentioned Borders selling the Aluratek eBook Reader Pro for $120. Well, they’ve now dropped the price of the Aluratek Reader to just $99.  Check out the specifics at Borders here.

Its exclusive Reflective Light LCD Screen Technology is not the E Ink display used by industry leaders Kindle, Kobo, Nook and Sony, but the makers claim it is easy on the eyes, good on batteries and delivers the goods without any flashing or flickering.

Having read eBooks now on the Sony Reader, Nook and my HP Mini via Adobe Digital Editions I can easily see the jump to the Aluratek device. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s just a delivery system for eBooks, and each has its own pros and cons. In this case, the extremely low price makes it perfect for mainstream consumption.

One gets the impression today that eInk and large screens are a must. I am retired and read a reasonable amount of books. Personally I think that eink is overrated. I have a 5″ eInk BEBOOK Mini and while the screen is very nice, I read today far more on my iPod Touch and Nokia n810 devices than on my BEBOOK. You get used to the smaller size screen in a short time, the backlight is nice to have and the iPod fits even in a t-shirt pocket. We have lots of sunshine here in Spain, but I have no problems reading on my iPod outdoors. And, yes, the screen is in colour, which is nice for illustrations. No, you can’t buy my BEBOOK, but when it dies, I doubt I will buy a replacement.

iPad? Not for me, it is too big, too heavy and too expensive. It may be nice for newspaper reading though but I don’t read them much.
